11/12 - Out with the old, in with the new.

Earlier this fall we had our furnace and A/C serviced... and the service guy discovered evidence of micro-fractures in our Heat Exchanger. As far as our Carbon Monoxide monitor could tell, we had no trace of CO in the house. But, on the safe side and the drive for efficiency we decided to take the plunge and replace our furnace before it dies at an inopportune time.

The Old Rheem 80% efficient furnace circa 1986 . (effective efficiency probably closer to 50%)
The new Carrier 95% efficient furnace (circa 2007).

For an invisible home improvement.. having the new furnace is quite nice. It is much quieter than the old one, most of the time you don't even know when it's running. The big advantage is the 2 stage burner, and variable speed blower fan. After one month of use, it seems our gas bill has decreased. We also considered the Trane 95% model, but decided that we liked the Carrier Air Purifier better, which steered us back to Carrier.
