Sabbatical Blog: 10/8 Cancun, Mexico!

10/8 Cancun, Mexico!
We started our day bright and early at 6AM. Our flight leaves LAX at 9:37AM via Alaska Airlines. We dumped the rental car the night before so we had one less thing to deal with in the AM. The airport shuttle got us to the terminal quickly, and we were checked in quickly. The big wait was through the security line, which was wrapped outside along the curb.

We got on our flight okay, with the slight delay of the gate agents having to scan Kylie’s passport because the terminal agent didn’t do it. It’s a little over a 4 hour flight from LAX to CUN. Kylie napped for about 2 hours of the flight. We had a family of 4 near us, and their 2 boys were a bit loud… loud enough for Traci to hear them through her earplugs. We were fortunate none-the-less that Kylie did nap for those 2 hours.

For me, it was during the flight that I started feeling worse… the beginning of my cold, ugh, just as we arrive in Cancun. The customs/immigration process was easy. The Hertz people were extremely courteous… they escorted us to the outside curb where our private Hertz shuttle was waiting for us. In Cancun or Mexico in general, the Hertz people really push the different insurance addendums. Total Liability was nearly $40/day. Which is steep. If you decline, they put a temporary authorization on your credit card for 10% of the vehicles value. So for a 15-20K car that’s 1500 to 2K on your credit card. Also part of the Hertz scam here in Cancun, is how they send you over to a someone who is essentially a Timeshare agent. I bought in before I realized it was a timeshare pitch that I had to sit through to get their perks. Initially, I was under the impression that they were simply giving vouchers for eating on the premises of their new resort, which seemed like a good deal. I give them $20, they give me a voucher for visiting their new resort. It is a 90 minute spiel, with a free buffet lunch at one of the of the "Royal" branded resorts, and for enduring it they'd give you $120 USD cash.

After getting our rental car, another Jeep Liberty, we made our way to the hotel, The Westin Resort and Spa Cancun, which is only a short 12-15 minute drive from the airport. It is on the southern end of the Hotel Zone, which is an impressive strip of hotels that runs far North.

Upon check-in, we were informed that we were given an upgraded room. The 6th floor with an Ocean view and Balcony. It’s a large spacious room, but because of the all the hard materials (stucco, tile, etc). It felt a bit cavernous at first. It’s still hot outside… hot and very humid. We settled in and ordered room service before calling it a night.

Bright and early, we started our day from the Four Points LAX.

Here we are checking into our Hotel. They had one of these art dolphins on display.

Kylie getting acquainted with our balcony right away. Good thing the railing is small enough that she couldn't fit through. Otherwise we'd have to keep a closer eye on her.

A look north up the Cancun Hotel Zone during dusk.

Kylie found her bed for the week. She was playing with the drawers and climbed her way up.

Traci feeding Kylie some in-room dinner.
